What Is Food Adulteration and Food Poisoning?
The adulteration of food refers to a process by which the quality of a food product is diminished or altered by the addition or extraction of an ingredient. Adulteration also refers to the replacement of a product or products within a specific food (i.e. a bag of chips) with something different. Also known as “food fraud,” adulteration may involve anything from replacing natural vanilla in a product with synthetic vanilla to adding diethylene glycol (a toxic chemical) to wine and more. Many adulterants have been linked to a variety of health complications, including stomach upset, liver problems, carcinogenic effects, tumors, heart disease, and more.
Food poisoning, on the other hand, refers to illness caused by food contaminated with a foodborne illness. Common foodborne illnesses include salmonella, rotavirus, E. coli, and many others. Symptoms might include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, severe dehydration, and in some cases, even death.
