Austin Motorcycle Accident Prevention Tips

With summer right around the corner, you might be dusting off your hog and preparing to enjoy many days and nights out on the road. Before taking off for a trip across the state, we recommend that you bone up on your motorcycle safety first. Even experienced bikers can get into accidents, often because they made a small, careless mistake.

At DJC Law, we represent the interests of motorcycle riders who have been injured in an accident. After a collision, make sure to contact us to discuss whether you have a legal claim to compensation.

Increase Your Visibility

There is a simple reason that many motorists crash into motorcycles or pull directly in front of them: the driver cannot see you. And one reason they cannot see bikers is that they are not looking for us. This makes perfect sense. As the National Safety Council reminds us, most vehicles on the road are other passenger cars or vans or trucks.

Moreover, motorcycles often blend in with the road or other vehicles. For this reason, you want to stand out:

  • Try to paint your motorcycle a color that isn’t black or brown. Those dark colors blend in. Instead, pick something brighter, like yellow or orange.
  • Wear bright clothing. Even if your bike doesn’t stand out, you and your passengers can. Get a neon pink helmet or a bright jacket.
  • Wear reflective tape or put it on your motorcycle.
  • Use your lights, which can alert a driver that you are approaching.

Brush Up on Your Skills

Both novice and experienced riders can take a skills course to improve their ability to maneuver and avoid accidents. Seek out classes by doing an online search. A class should charge a reasonable fee and include practice out on the road. You don’t want to learn about safety by simply sitting at a desk or in front of a computer and reading a PowerPoint presentation.

Wear a Helmet

Texas law requires that most people wear a helmet unless they are over 21 and meet certain requirements. Regardless, you should wear a helmet. Helmets reduce the chances of a serious head injury and fatality substantially.

Find a helmet that is approved by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and make sure it fits your head. Riding with a helmet can take a little getting used to. For example, you might need to turn your head more to see to your left and right. But these small adjustments are worth it for the safety that a helmet provides.

Follow the Rules of the Road

It’s a mistake to think that only car and truck drivers are responsible for motorcycle accidents. Many bikers also commit errors that lead directly to accidents. Always remember to follow the rules of the road. Never drink and ride and always yield the right of way.
