Fun Things to Do with Your Date in Austin

Austin’s population continues to boom for a simple reason—there is so much to do in this city, that almost anyone will feel right at home. If you’ve just moved here, or if you are set to enjoy your first date in the city, then consider the following activities.

Go to a Texas Football Game

Football is huge in Austin, just like the rest of the state. If you've never been to a Texas Longhorns football game, you're truly missing out. The Longhorns most recently posted an impressive 10-4 record, with a win in the Sugar Bowl over Georgia. Or, if you want a smaller venue, you can visit any one of the local high schools on a Friday night to soak up the atmosphere.

Sing Your Favorite Song at a Karaoke Bar

There are bars everywhere around the city. Some of the more popular are:

  • Topspin, a karaoke and wing bar
  • College Roadhouse, where you can enjoy Korean food
  • Hi Tunes, where you can enjoy belting out your favorite songs well into the a.m. hours
  • Chinatown, a karaoke bar that serves Chinese food and song until 2:00 a.m.

Brush up by watching YouTube videos of your favorite 80s bands. Your date will be impressed!

Have a Picnic on Mount Bonnell

Mount Bonnell Austin Texas

Plan a morning or afternoon date and head out to Mount Bonnell, a 775 foot high outcropping that overlooks Lake Austin. You can pack a picnic and enjoy the views and sun.

Find Deals at the Austin City Wide Garage Sale

What better way to show you are serious about each other than to go shopping at one of the city’s biggest garage sales? Held at the Palmer Events Center on Saturdays and Sundays, early shoppers can get in for free. You can find anything you are looking for, such as movie memorabilia or furniture if you are serious about moving in together. Bookmark the event calendar for up-to-date listings.

Visit Longhorn Caverns State Park

Draw closer with your date by being with the natural beauty of Longhorn Caverns State Park, where you can take a 90-minute guided cave tour. You’ll have to pay a fee for the guided tour, which is the only way you can gain access to the caves. Adults can expect to pay around $20.

If you want to take a pass on the caves, then you can enter the park for free and enjoy a picnic or look at the historic architecture. The grounds are open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm during the week and open until 6:00 pm on weekends. Walking tours do not begin until 10:00 am and end at 3:00 or 4:00.

Watch a Movie at the Alamo Drafthouse

This movie theater has a reputation for being the best in the world. They sometimes screen weird or off-beat cult classics, which can help you show off your personality, but they also show new releases. Hardcore movie fans enjoy the marathon screenings and dress up in costumes for the occasion. You can enjoy dinner and drinks while watching your show, which can save you a trip to a restaurant or bar.
